RSS
RSS is a relatively new phenomenen, and
stands for Really Simple Syndication. Subscribing to an RSS
feed allows you to receive the latest news from websites (who
support RSS), as soon as they add fresh content to their site.
This saves you the hassle of having to trawl through your
favourite sites to check whether they've added anything new to
their site.
To view these latest updates, all you need
is a free news reader, where you can simply add RSS, and add
the URL of the site you want to recieve the fresh content
from. Most sites who support this will give full instructions
on how to use the service.
You can benefit from this yourself in two
ways. Firstly you can add an RSS feed to your site, and receive
fresh content from other sites. As I have discussed in other
sections, search engines like and reward sites with not only
good content, but fresh and regulared updated content.
Therefore adding and displaying an RSS feed on your site
will automatically add fresh content to your site,
from sites that you have opted to recieve feeds from. This
will also help to keep people coming back to your site.
For example, let's say you had a site
about fishing, and you had found a good fishing
writer from an article directory who wrote some excellent
articles, which would be of benefit to your visitors. Most
article directories now support RSS feeds, so you can simply
subscribe to this feed and every time this particular writer
adds a new article to the directory, this article, or the link
to the article will be delivered to your newsreader and
displayed on your site if you so wished.
Another way you can benefit is by allowing
other people to subscribe to your feeds. Therefore when you
update your site, this fresh content will be delivered to
everyone who has opted-in and subscribed to your RSS feed.
Also, not only can subscribers receive the latest updates
through their selected news reader, but it's also possible to
deliver updates directly to a specified email address as
well.
To summarise, content is very important,
both in terms of achieving good search engines and encouraging
repeat visitors to your site, so make sure you're constantly
adding new content to your site. Writing original content will
always be the best method, but adding RSS feeds from relevant
sites related to yours is also recommended.
